In an exclusive, Deadline has revealed that former Wall Street Journal reporter and now acclaimed director, Cathy Yan, will be directing DC Films’ “Birds of Prey”. Although Yan has only helmed one movie, the indie project “Dead Pigs”, it recently won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance this year.
The Birds of Prey script was written by Christina Hodson who will also be writing the upcoming Batgirl movie. Hodson has also recently penned Bumblebee, a spinoff of the Transformers films.
Yan is the first Asian woman and the second female director officially announced for the DC Films universe.
Birds of Prey was one of the many films announced in 2016 as being in development for the DC Universe prior to the release of Suicide Squad. The Birds of Prey are essentially an all female superhero team who at times included Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, Catwoman, Power Girl, Hawkgirl and Poison Ivy. In an interview with MTV, Robbie said of Harley Quinn, “I want to see her with other women. I kept saying when we were shooting Suicide Squad, ‘She needs her girlfriends,’ she needs other girls around her because she loves that. You see it in the comics. She loves meeting people, any people, but she needs her girl gang.”
Production on Birds of Prey is expected to begin towards the end of 2018.
