According to former Latino Review reporter, Mario Francisco-Robles, Robles writes on his new website, Revenge of the Fans, that Henry Cavill’s next appearance as Superman will be in David F Sandberg’s Shazam!.
According to Robles’ report, the decision comes after many an internal discussion among Warner Bros. higher ups regarding the positive response to Cavill’s Superman by mainstream audiences. Although a Man of Steel sequel has been discussed as well as Cavill’s possible inclusion in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam, it’s allegedly been agreed that those two projects are too far off. Robles writes that Warner Bros. would like to capitalize on the positive response to Superman sooner rather than later. Even Sandberg, Shazam!’s director, has been posting Superman imagery on his Instagram for quite some time now.
Robles goes on to claim that Superman’s purpose in the film is to serve as an influence on how Asher Angel’s Billy Batson will comport himself after he obtains his powers. Given the similarities between Superman and Shazam! in the comics, this would be a nice explanation of Batson having intentionally modelled himself after his idol, Superman.
The report comes amidst the Warner Bros’ DC shakeup which brought on New Line’s Walter Hamada to lead the overall development of the DC Films franchise. Moreover, many projects previously reported to be in development now hang in limbo as a new slate will allegedly be announced soon. Shazam! on the other hand, is expected to begin principal photography any day now.
If Robles’ report is true, I’d hope that Batson was one of the two boys filming Superman at the beginning of Justice League. Not only would it serve as an effective throughline between the two films, but it would also be a great nod to the comics as Superman and Shazam! have been featured together in quite a few storylines.
Shazam! is directed by David F Sandberg and stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Zachary Levi as Shazam!. The film is expected to arrive in theaters on April 5, 2019.
