Tom Holland just ‘confirmed’ a popular fan theory connecting Iron Man 2 to the MCU’s Spider-Man. In an interview with The Huffington Post, Holland claimed that Peter Parker has been part of the MCU since Iron Man 2. In the film, a young boy dawning an Iron Man mask faces off against Hammer’s armed drones only to be saved at the last minute by Tony Stark.
As to whether or not that was a young Peter, Tom Holland said, “It is Peter Parker. I can confirm that, that is Peter Parker. I can confirm that as of today. I literally had a conversation with Kevin Feige only 20 minutes ago. Maybe I’ve just done a big, old spoiler, but it’s out there now. It’s cool. I like the idea that Peter Parker has been in the universe since the beginning.”
Knowing this, it suddenly brings new context as to Peter’s admiration and the relationship between the web-slinger and Stark … if it were confirmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Fiege. Unfortunately, in an interview with io9, Holland came clean that he may or may not be revealing a part of Peter’s official backstory. The actor said, “It’s funny, I literally had a conversation with Kevin like 20 minutes before [The Huffington Post] interview and he didn’t confirm it, I took it upon myself just because I thought it would be a good story and it’s exploded.” Similar to last week’s confusion regarding Venom’s inclusion in the MCU thanks to Amy Pascal, this appears to simply be an actor just talking out of turn.
Until it’s confirmed by Kevin Fiege directly, I guess it’s just a prank bro.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is set for release on July 7, 2017.
