In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Joel Kinnaman stated that as he understood it, the sequel to Suicide Squad would begin filming in 2018.
When asked if he would return for the sequel and who he would want to direct the sequel, Kinnaman said the following:
What’s the status of the Suicide Squad sequel and will you be back for it?
As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.
There’s no director attached to it yet. Who do you want to direct it?
Ultimately, I’d love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn’t want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that’s able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well.
Suicide Squad 2 does not currently have a director attached to the project. However, it has been rumored that Mel Gibson has been the frontrunner for the director’s chair. In an interview with ET, Gibson confirmed that he had discussed the possibilities and opportunity with Warner Bros. representatives.
In an exclusive, The Hollywood Reporter published a report stating that not only was the sequel a “priority” for Warner Bros. But also, The Legend of Tarzan’s Adam Cozad was in negotiations to pen the screenplay.
Joel Kinnaman starred as Rick Flag in the 2016 summer blockbuster. Although Suicide Squad was critically panned, the film garnered an unanticipated $745.6 million worldwide and earned an Oscar. Kinnaman recently starred in Netflix’s House of Cards as Will Conway, youthful rival to series protagonist, Frank Underwood. Kinnaman will next be seen in Altered Carbon.
